Thankfully

Thankfully the rain stopped around midnight last night. When I awoke at 5:30 am the basement had filled again, but not quite as much as it had before. I spent the morning wet vacing again and the basement is drying out!!! The weatherman is predicting 6 days of sunshine, which is the best news we've heard in a while. Sadly, northern RI is a lot worse off than we are. Warwick Mall, one of the biggest in the state, is under 4-5 feet of water. Cars in the parking lot only have their roofs showing. Sewage treatment plants have failed and citizens are being advised not to flush their toilets or do any laundry. Most of our friends had water in their basements.... sump pumps were in high demand and all over town hoses are draining into streets. I suspect that the dump will be packed the next few days with people discarding ruined items.
Thankfully (number 2)... Jesse and her family arrived safely in Athens and are spending the next week with Ted. Will be interesting to see how they like it.

Record Rainfall

The weatherman informed us tonight that we had broken a 100 year old RI record for rainfall in March. Providence received 9 inches of rain in the last 31 hours and the town next to us received 7.75". Every river/stream in the state is overflowing and ready to flood. Most schools were closed today because roads were impassable. I spent the last 7 hours wet vacing the basement and trying to keep up with the steady water that seeps through the cracks of our 80 year old field stone foundation. John has been a big help as have a couple of people who stopped by to assist us. Once the wet vac is filled we dump it into buckets, tote it up the stairs, and dump it in the toilet. (There is no drain/sink in the basement) I'm sure I'll sleep well tonight.....

Farewell to KVR, Hawaii

This was the view from our front porch. I'm still trying to download a picture of the three of us at our "last supper" but am having no luck. Our original flight bak to mainland was cancelled on Wednesday, after we sat for 2 hours on the plane. So we went to a hotel in Kona and had better luck flying out on Thursday. I was exhausted by Friday at 6:00 pm, when Teddie and Theo met me at PVD

Times Zup

Unfortunately my 10 day Hawaiian stay is ends at 2:00 pm today. I swam in the pool at 7:15 am, snorkeled among colorful fish till 8:00 am, and after eating and showering, am almost ready to go. Such a relaxing place. Nothing to think about, except maybe "which dessert should I eat tonight?" I will miss the ocean sparkling off our porch, watching all the brave souls swim to the buoy I have no desire to visit, the friendliness of the employees, the pool, the tropical fish, and the time spent with my parents. One thing I will NOT MISS is my father's oxygen machine, sounding like an airplane idling in the hale. Friday I return to RI and the real world. See some of you very soon!!

Lost Track of Time

Sitting under the rustling palms, it's hard to even remember what day it is. Food, as some of you know, is more than just delicious. First few days were windy, today it is 80 degrees with no wind.
Some of you will chuckle when you read that I made a liquor run yesterday. My folks actually bought the goods but I am their driver... so... I spend every free minute on the beach, in and out of the ocean and the pool. Have already finished one book and am ready to start the next. Yesterday I played scrabble with another guests, 2 games in fact. That was icing on a plumeria covered coconut cake!!!
