Today is a national holiday, Clean Monday. It started out as a religious holiday (The first day of Lent. Their Easter is a month later than ours.) and evolved into a cultural one where families go out and fly kites. We've seen lots of sidewalk kite vendors everywhere we've gone. Most of the kites are 6 sided and have quilt like designs. People go to parks or hilltops to fly them, so Ted and I hiked up a hill behind the college. We left at 10:30 am, stopping first to get spinach pies for breakfast. We walked to the top of a very high hill, following first a two lane road and then a dirt one. We saw a few families flying kites, detangling lines, and laughing a lot. By the time we headed down the hill, aat 12:30 the road was packed. Kites were everywhere, strings crisscrossing each other, grandparents helping hold the kites, and kids climbing trees to retrieve stuck kites. I took a few pictures of the kites, but they are lost in the clouds. It was a happy hike and reminded me of The Kite Runner.
